The Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail is perhaps the most easily accessed portion of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It also provides a wide variety of photographic subjects, including representative examples of homesteaders' residences and entrepreneurial efforts. One such example is the Alfred Reagan Place, including the Reagans' "saddle bag" home and, across the Motor Nature Trail pavement, Reagan's mill, one of several business endeavors the enterprising Mr. Reagan developed in the mountain hollows near his home. In accordance with customary practice at the time, Alfred charged a gallon per bushel in toll for grinding his neighbors' grain; most likely, he converted this charge-in-kind into cash in some manner. But Mr. Reagan was not at all greedy. In his more active years, he was a lay preacher in the church he helped construct, and when a death occurred in the neighborhood, he often built the coffin free of charge. The restored flume and gurgling sounds of Roaring Fork make the Reagan place a pleasant and relaxing stop on the scenic Motor Nature Trail drive. |
