autumn afternoon, hound ears

Like anyone with a new toy, when I purchase new equipment I can't wait to try it out. This photo resulted from just such an occasion. I had just received a new wide-angle zoom, wider than any lens I had used previously. I didn't have time after work to make it to a "serious" photographic location before dusk, so I just drove a favorite country road near my home. The low angle of the late afternoon sun made for pleasing "modeling" light, and I was attracted to the bright, backlit autumn leaves of these old maples. The rail fence and gravel road seemed to complete the scene, so I stopped my drive right there and quickly exposed a roll of slides. In doing so, I immediately fell in love with the perspective available with ultra-wide angle lenses; I especially like the ability to be so close to the subject. Though I photographed from several vantage points that afternoon, this is my favorite from that day's brief shoot.
