autumn fog, blue ridge parkway

Sometimes, as on this day, I take the long way home after work, driving the Parkway from Blowing Rock to Linville. This day, as I neared the Grandfather Mountain section of the Parkway, I encountered a low-hanging fog/cloud mix, coupled with an intermittent drizzle. At this overlook, my eye was attracted by the oranges and browns of autumn, muted by the soft gray fog and dripping with lingering rain drops. I found the scene simultaneously mysterious and soothing. Judging from the incredulous stares I received, several afternoon passersby must have thought me a bit odd as I huddled over my near ground-level tripod, doing my best to shield the front lens element from the drizzle while also managing to focus and release the shutter. Odd or not, for me it was a very satisfying photographic session, and this photo has become one of my very best sellers.
