rhododendron and fence, carver's gap

The famous natural rhododendron gardens on Roan Mountain are not confined to the Roan massif itself. These lush rhodos, seemingly doing their best to completely obliterate the old rail fence, are at Carver's Gap between Roan Mountain and Round Bald, literally a few dozen feet from the North Carolina - Tennessee state line. After a cloudy, stormy dawn, winds picked up and drove the clouds away, allowing a bright June mid-morning sun to illuminate these blossoms. The wind, however, was not photographer-friendly. As I crouched over my tripod waiting to trigger my remote shutter release, a photographer with a nice SLR around his neck walked by on the way back to his car. "What film speed are you using?" he inquired. "ISO 50," I replied. "Then what do you do about the wind?" he asked with obvious frustration. "Wait. Just wait." And wait is exactly what I did. Eventually, the wind died for a brief moment, and I was able to make this photograph.
