By the time the New River is joined by its major tributary, the Gauley River, to form the Kanawha, the whitewater for which the New River Gorge is famous has been largely left behind. Here, the river is wider and more slowly moving. This somewhat impressionistic looking shot was extracted from a photo of a peaceful autumn river scene near the community of Gauley Bridge, WV. I thought the flow of the river and the slight, breeze-driven movement of its surface combined to make the autumn reflection appear rather painterly. The effect was enhanced by stretching the image slightly in Photoshop. |
