For nature photographers fortunate enough to live and work in the North Carolina High Country, Price Lake is a convenient and often productive shooting location. The lake can present amazingly different photographic possibilities depending on time of day, lighting conditions, weather and season. This particular October day, I arrived at the lake at dusk. Light was dim and my camera was loaded with slow ISO film. But winds were unusually calm, leaving foliage almost completely unmoving. One particular scene on the inlet side of the lake struck me because of the brilliant autumn oranges, reds and yellows and their reflection in the waveless lake surface. Film being by far the least expensive part of photography using that photographic medium, I decided I had nothing to lose by exposing a few frames. The low light required an exposure of a full 30 seconds, but enabled me to capture detail in the leaves and tree trunks. While the wind wasn't moving the surface of the water, the slow current was. Because the shutter was open for so long, the colorful reflections were given a streaked, blurry quality that reminded me of a fine woven tapestry, and gave rise to the photograph's title. |
