linn cove viaduct, autumn

The Linn Cove Viaduct is widely recognized as an engineering marvel in the field of highway construction. As the connection that finally completed the 469-mile Blue Ridge Parkway through Virginia and North Carolina, the Viaduct was designed and constructed to have minimal ecological and environmental impact on the shoulder of Grandfather Mountain, an international biosphere reserve providing protected habitat for over 50 rare and endangered species. The sinuous curves of the Viaduct mimic the vertical undulations of Grandfather and the surrounding mountains, which include the highly recognizable peaks of Table Rock and Hawksbill, both prominent in the motorist's view when southbound over the Viaduct. The Linn Cove Viaduct is an iconic image of the North Carolina High Country and has been photographed innumerable times, especially in autumn. It is one of my favorite subjects for early morning shooting in any season.
