The trail to this almost delicate 70-foot waterfall, Crabtree Falls, is accessed at the Crabtree Meadows area on the Blue Ridge Parkway about 40 miles south of Linville. I enjoy making a loop of the hike, utilizing a steep, short descent trail to the falls and a slightly longer, more gradual ascent along Big Crabtree Creek back up to the trailhead. On spring days, such as this one, the flow of Crabtree Creek and the volume of the falls is much greater than in late summer or autumn, creating a strong contrast between the lush green foliage, dark tree trunks, and the almost pure white of the cascading water. Though I have never made a black and white photograph of Crabtree Falls, in spring it is a scene that almost begs for that medium. |
